Le Grand Trail des Templiers :
The start is unique and emotionally charged in the dark of night. A gentle start along the Paulhe road to the hamlet of Carbassas. Then the peloton spreads out on the road to the Paulhe cemetery, before attacking the climb to the plateau via the chemin des cerisiers, then the terrible Carbassas hump, wide but very steep, where you can watch the fairy-tale spectacle of 2,500 headlamps waving in the night. From here, we continue across the causse, with daybreak on the horizon, along beautiful forest tracks, passing through Betpaumes, Le Sonnac and La Tour. From farm to farm, you reach Peyreleau on a beautiful descent overhanging the Tarn valley. This is the first single-track section. And it’s the first refreshment point, with several thousand spectators in attendance. Then it’s off to tackle the second major difficulty, a route along the Jonte to reach the ascent to the hermitage of St Michel, the chapel of St Jean des Balmes and the Domaine de la Roujarie, before returning to the caussenard village of St André de Vézines, where accordionists set the mood. Then we plunge southwards, passing through such emblematic places as the perched village of Montméjean, the ascent of the Rajol cliffs, Roques Altes and its emblematic arch, before reaching Roque Ste Marguerite, a nerve-racking section with no shortage of surprises in the Riou Sec. After admiring the beautiful narrow streets of Roque Ste Marguerite, you begin the climb back up to Larzac and on to Pierrefiche. The Larzac spreads out on the horizon, with beautiful paths lined with hundred-year-old box trees, overhanging monotraces and aerial passages above the Pompidou ledges.
The whole Dourbie valley then reveals its charms, its intimate character through the cliffs of La Clapade, the hamlet of Mas de Bru before plunging down to the hamlet of Massebiau via the descent of Roubelier. The final stretch is on the Causse Noir, requiring a cool head, as the final climb is a real challenge. At the Ferme du Cade, we stop for refreshments in a unique, magnificently preserved Causse setting. Then it’s on to the CAF’s technical descent, the climb up the rocky nose of Pouncho d’Agast via the Faux Monnayeur. At the summit, you can say OUF! Then it’s a matter of sliding down to the finish via the Grotte du Hibou to the arch of happiness and deliverance.
