What is a sports cake and why eat it?

The sports cake has many uses:

  • It can replace breakfast
  • Can be used as a snack during or just before a race
  • Provides energy for long-lasting efforts

The important thing in this recipe is to get the amount of sugar, fat and protein right, so that it provides all the important nutrients.

Easily digestible, you can consume it up to 1 hour before a competition for intense effort, and even during the effort in the case of a long bike ride or hike.

The Recipe

Ingredients

  • 150 g wholemeal or semi-complete flour
  • 1 sachet baking powder
  • 150 g oat flakes
  • 50 g honey or agave syrup
  • 400 ml semi-skimmed milk or 260 g curd cheese (3% fat)
  • 1 egg
  • 15 g olive oil (or grapeseed oil)
  • 30 g dried apricots, pitted
  • 20 g dried figs
  • 60 g raisins
  • 50 g pecans

Instructions

  1. Cut all dried fruit into small pieces
  2. Preheat oven to 160°C
  3. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and rolled oats.
  4. Combine honey and milk (or yoghurt) and add to flour mixture.
  5. Add oil and egg, mix well.
  6. Finally add the dried fruit
  7. Pour the mixture into muffin tins.
  8. Bake for 35 min at 160°C
  9. Allow to cool

Now all you have to do is enjoy your challenge! 🏃
