Half Marathon Pace Chart: Split Times and Pace Calculator

Aiming for 1h45, the two-hour mark or a time under 1h30? With a half marathon pace chart, you see it straight away: pace makes all the difference. A few seconds too many per kilometer at the start, and km 15 turns into an ordeal.

This half marathon pace chart brings together everything you need: an interactive calculator that works out your pace and split times every 5 km, a full chart from 1h00 to 3h00, six print-ready charts for the classic goal times, and methods to estimate your realistic time from your 10K or your max aerobic speed (MAS).

🧭 What is a half marathon pace chart for?

Pace, speed and split times: the three benchmarks

Your pace is the time it takes to run one kilometer (in min/km). Speed (in km/h) is the equivalent, more telling on a treadmill or a bike. Split times tell you what the clock should read at km 5, 10, 15 and 20 to hit your goal time.

A 21.0975 km distance that shows no mercy

The half marathon is short enough to tempt you into a fast start, and long enough to make you pay for it. A pace chart helps you stay on track from the first kilometers, when adrenaline pushes you to speed up. At every marker, you know whether you are on target.

🎯 What goal should you aim for? Estimating your half marathon time

A realistic goal beats an ambitious one that collapses at km 14. Two simple methods help you place your level.

From your 10K time

The common rule is to multiply your 10K time by 2.2. The coefficient drops to 2.1 for an endurance runner and rises to 2.3 for a runner less used to long distances. It is an estimate, to be confirmed with a long run at your target pace.

From your max aerobic speed (MAS)

In a half marathon, a trained runner can generally hold between 80% and 85% of their MAS (max aerobic speed, also called vVO2max). This chart converts your MAS into a pace and a finish time.

⌚ Managing your pace on race day

The first kilometer: the danger zone

On the start line, the crowd and the atmosphere carry you along. Resist: the first five kilometers should feel almost too easy. Better to lose three seconds at the start than ten minutes at the end.

Build in a safety margin

A course is never run in a straight line: racing lines, aid stations and corners add a few dozen meters. Your watch may read 21.3 km at the finish. Running 1 to 2 seconds per kilometer faster than the theoretical pace makes up for this extra distance.

The negative split: running the second half faster

Reaching km 10 with a few seconds in hand, then picking up the pace after km 15 if your legs respond, remains the safest strategy. If you are already at your limit at halfway, slow down on purpose: you will finish faster than by hanging on.

Which metric should you follow on your watch?

Current pace varies with the GPS signal, especially in town. Rely instead on your pace per kilometer and above all on the clock at the markers, compared with your chart.

💡 Write your split times at 5, 10, 15 and 20 km on a small piece of paper tucked into your belt, or on your forearm with a marker. A few glances are enough.

🖼️ And after the race?

After a half marathon, everything moves fast: the medal ends up in a drawer, the bib at the bottom of a bag. The Post Trace turns your GPS trace, your exact route and your finish time into a custom printed poster: bib number, name, finish time, everything is personalized. A concrete keepsake that tells the story of your race, not someone else’s.

Half marathon pace FAQ

What pace do you need to run a half marathon in 2 hours?

To cover 21.0975 km in 2 hours, you need to hold a pace of 5:41 min/km, or about 10.5 km/h. You then reach 10 km in 56:53 and 20 km in 1:53:45. It is a very common goal for runners preparing their first half marathon.

What pace for a 1h45 half marathon?

A 1h45 half marathon takes 4:59 min/km, or 12.1 km/h. Your split at 10 km should be around 49:46 and at 15 km around 1:14:39. This time already assumes several months of regular training.

How do you calculate your half marathon pace?

Divide your goal time in seconds by 21.0975. For 1h30 (5,400 seconds): 5,400 ÷ 21.0975 = 256 seconds, or 4:16 per kilometer. The calculator on this page does the math for you and shows your split times.

What is a good half marathon time?

It all depends on your level, your age and the course. Going under 2h is a very common first benchmark, 1h45 marks a regular runner, and getting under 1h30 takes structured training. The best goal is the one that is realistic given your recent performances.

Can you estimate your half marathon time from your 10K?

Yes, roughly. Multiply your 10K time by 2.2 (2.1 for an endurance runner, 2.3 for a runner less used to long distances). A 10K in 50 minutes gives a half marathon of around 1h50. Check this method with a long run at your target pace.

Should you start faster or slower in a half marathon?

Better to start at your target pace, or even a few seconds slower in the first kilometer, then hold or speed up slightly in the second half (negative split). Starting too fast is the most common mistake and often costs you from km 15.

What is the difference between a half marathon and a marathon in terms of pace?

In a half marathon, you run noticeably faster than your marathon pace, because the effort lasts half as long. The marathon demands much more cautious pacing early on. Find the dedicated benchmarks in our marathon pace chart.
